The world is torn with many problems from social unrests and civil wars to health crises, crimes, and environmental issues such as worsening pollution and solid wastes. As an individual, there may be so little that you can do that can give a big impact. But you can do something.
Wherever you live, there is always a problem of solid waste. Every country has its own problems of solid waste. But if only all citizens can cooperate, the problem will not go on getting worse every day. As an individual, you can do something.
We consume a variety of products every day. Whether you like it or not, there may always be a waste product from these goods. One of which is the packaging. With many companies getting involved with environmental concerns, they’ve chosen sustainable packaging for their products. As a consumer, you should be able to detect these products because they have less impact on the environment.
Here are some ways on how to spot a product using sustainable packaging.
Lightweight Materials
Lightweight packaging means that there may be less materials used in making the packaging. There may be some lightweight packaging that may not be good for the environment, such as plastic. However, they may have been manufactured using less of our natural resources.
Another thing to consider is the size of the packaging. Ideally, the size of packaging should be proportionate to the size of item it contains. This means that there is no waste of materials.
Biodegradable Packaging
A packaging that can be composted means that it comes from sustainable sources. Take for example the use of cardboards as packaging materials. Cardboards generally are made from the trunk of trees. On the other hand, plastic is a synthetic by-product which does not degrade naturally.
Reusable Containers
There are some products that may not be appropriate to be packaged in cardboards. These products are usually food products that normally use plastic for packaging. But even then, the plastic containers should be reusable so they will not go directly to the garbage bin.
Environment-Friendly Labels
Inks used to label packaging should be consistent with a company’s goals of helping the environment. If they are not environment-friendly, labels and adhesives should be removable from the packaging. Inks used should also not contaminate the packaging materials.
